In English, adjectives precede the nouns they qualify. In French, some adjectives:

a. follow the noun (post-nominal)

In French, most adjectives follow the noun. Among those are adjectives indicating color, shape, religion, nationality and past participles used as adjectives.

Examples:
une valise verte
un employé français
un paquet recommandé

b. precede the noun (pre-nominal)

Examples of pre-nominal adjectives can be found in lesson 7.

that:

also precede the nouns.


c. may be used in both positions.

Some adjectives can occasionally change their position for stylistic reasons.

Some adjectives are used in different positions according to the nouns they qualify, although their meaning is exactly the same in both positions.

la prochaine fois next time
la semaine prochaine next week
